WOODLAND BREATHING

2024. Aluminium, LED programmable lighting, glazing film

60m long x 1.8m high

HEALTHCARE PUBLIC ART

The metal screen, printed film, and lighting, in the artwork Woodland Breathing for the Bethesda Mental Health Clinic is designed to evoke the dappled light through the woodland canopy of the nearby Beeliar Regional Park. As mental health concerns are as complex and diverse as the individuals affected, the concept was to reference place and the health benefits of immersion in a natural environment and the slowing of breath that has been widely used (across cultures and time) to reduce stress levels and enhance wellbeing.

Slowly pulsing with light, circular forms are punctuated with patterning drawn from the banksia nuts and leaves.

Flowing across 60 metres, the public artwork draws people to the entry. Concealed lighting behind the screen undulates in concert with the direct soffit lighting creates an effect of a breathing façade.
